BlackBerry Bold 9700
Hello everyone! I thought it was time to update whatever has been happening recently. So i thought why not start with my favorite topic of all. That’s right. Am gonna introduce my cell phone to you all. Back in January 2009, i bought the Nokia E71 which i thought was pretty cool. But later in October 2009, it gave way to the Samsung Omnia II GT-I8000. That was phone was sheer beauty but only as far as the looks and the resolution goes. The interface sucks badly and yeah, i got rid of it in December 2009. However at that time there was nothing cool in the market. Either the cell phones lacked that particular appeal or they were way to expensive. So believe it or not, i got myself a 6K INR worth Sony Ericsson Naite. It was just a temporary buy because i had my eyes set on some another phone that time. But believe me for one thing, Naite (even though it was so cheap) was better in so many aspects than Samsung’s Omnia II which cost me 18K INR or something!
Anyways, as i mentioned before, i had my eyes set on a particular company, so as to speak. It’s something that i was yet to try. No suspense here as the title of this article must have already given it all away. It’s the BlackBerry! I had been noticing how all corporate office guys were switching to BlackBerry and so i couldn’t resist buying one for myself. So i guess in April 2010, and after lot of debates with my friends for choosing the best BlackBerry handset, i decided to buy the BlackBerry Bold 9700. It has everything…. Looks, that feel good factor, user friendly interface, instant messaging, high resolution screen, 3G, Wi-Fi, QWERTY keyboard, good quality camera, emails, and the list goes on. It had way too many features and that’s what i loved about it.

Let’s go into some detailed overview of the phone… BlackBerry Bold is a particular series and so far it has four models in it, that being 8900, 9000, 9650 and 9700. Coming on to BlackBerry Bold 9700 now. The phone was launched in November 2009. I think in India it’s currently priced somewhere around 26K INR. It weighs 122gms with dimensions being 109 x 60 x 14 mm. That’s pretty sleek for such a monster. As for the display, it’s got 65K colors, TFT display. The screen is 2.44 inch and supports 480×360 resolution. It’s got a decent size QWERTY keyboard and has a touch sensitive optical trackpad. Practically, it’s got unlimited entries and fields for your phonebook. Seriously, for a contact i can add his Title, First Name, Last Name, Picture, Company, Job Title, Custom Ringtone for messages and another one for phone, As many eMail ID’s, Phone Numbers (As many phone numbers under one contact, further categorized into Home number, Work number etc), Pager, Fax numbers, Other numbers, PIN (that’s the blackberry special ID), AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, Window Messenger, Address, City, State, Country, Postal Code, Birthday, Anniversary, Categories, Web Page and your own custom field. Isn’t that enough for a contact? Phew!
Sorry i had to have a coffee after finishing through the “contacts” features. So shifted to a new paragraph. We were talking about the memory feature. Internally, BlackBerry 9700 has got 256MB storage space and 256MB RAM. It has expandable memory though. It comes in with 2GB microSD card and is upgradable up to 16GB. I guess 16GB is more than enough for phone until and unless you want to make this a multimedia storage phone. This phone has it all with GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and microUSB 2.0. Oh! It does not have an Infrared. Humm…Who needs it seriously??? So as i said, it has everything.

The camera is pretty awesome. Compared to Samsung Omnia II’s 5 megapixel camera, BlackBerry 9700 has just got 3.15 MP. But it’s far superior than Samsung’s camera. It’s got 2048×1536 pixels, auto-focus, LED flash and Image stabilization. Even though it’s not powerful, it still manages to capture great photographs even in dark areas. Moving on, Blackberry Bold 9700 has 624 MHz processor and comes with BlackBerry’s 5.0 Operating System. I have already had a look at 6.0 version OS and i can’t wait to get that into my phone. Humm..So, messaging part is awesome. You will soon get into habit of using small keys and there will be nothing faster from thereon when it comes to texting. Plus, hook up with your friends and business partner all the time as it allows you to send SMS, MMS and emails. But hey, you can also add Instant Messengers as well. It comes with BlackBerry messenger which is simply awesome. personally have added Yahoo messenger, Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, AIM, and ICQ. So i remain online, almost all the time. Isn’t that great! Plus, BlackBerry provides PUSH email service. That means that i get the email on my phone as soon as someone sends it to any of my 4 email addresses. I can add up to 10 email addresses of my own. This probably answers why the corporate sector is so mad about BlackBerry phones. 🙂

(The above video was shot by BlackBerry Bold 9700. And that’s me performing the David Blaine magic trick :D)
Okay there are so many features and i am really getting tired. I really got myself another cup of coffee. I will just hurry up with the rest of thing. Remember, the threaded view of iPhone, it has something similar to that. It has a HTML blackberry browser but i decided to add on Opera Mini to it as well. It has GPS and JAVA support. It’s really good when it comes to MS office documents. Excel, Powerpoint, Word to be precise. It also works on it’s magic for the PDF files. And it’s got awesome media player and a video player which supports lot of files. On cards, the phone’s standby time is 408 hrs and Talk time 6 hours. I actually have to charge it once every 24-36hrs, simply because i use the phone so much. And hey, it’s got that organizer and voice memo/dial as well. And it does has BlackBerry Application World where i can download free applications and they are self extracted and installed to your phone. I have got Facebook, Twitter, Snaptu, News headlines, Weather, Cricket scores, Football scores all delivered right to my phone, no matter where i am. And that’s the best part of it!
I have installed wordpress to my phone as well. So if anytime you see a small post with few pics in it, that post would be from my phone itself. If only i could just figure out how to send small size image that would suit the blog. Humm… Still working on it….
Here is an awesome interactive demo at the official site of Blackberry:

I am pretty satisfied with the phone. But i just saw BlackBerry Torch 9800. It’s touch screen on top with Blackberry 9700 on the bottom. Comes in with OS 6.0. It’s totally awesome. Hummm….Probably my next buy 😉
Phew! I think that was all. I finally did it! I wrote an article. Feels good but tiring as well. I will go off to sleep now. But i do expect your comments on this. Take care and God bless!!!
“Samsung’s Omnia II which cost me 18K INR or something!”
You bought it for almost 23k and sold it for 18.5k. 🙂
I forgot that 🙁
Thanks for the update!
Nice review. Though I liked Blackberry Bold 9700, the features don’t seem to justify the price tag. For the same amount, one could get a Samsung mobile with much better features.
